Ascendant or Lagna is the most important house of horoscope. To understand the lagna or ascendant we have to first understand the zodiac. There are in total 12 houses in Zodiac each of 30 degrees i.e. the complete zodiac of 360 degree is divided into 12 equal parts of 30 degrees each. In a kaal purush horoscope first house/ lagna/ ascendant belongs to Aries sign whose lord is Mars. Aries being fiery in nature represents the beginning of the new life cycle. In the simple layman language lagna can be described as the first impression, outlook, and personality, physical appearance, dignity, self of the native. First house also indicates the head, state of body, face, facial bones for the identification of disease.

In Vedic astrology 1st house is also referred as “Tanu Bhava” i.e. house of body. Therefore the looks, attraction in personality, physical features and personality majorly depend upon the condition of first house of the horoscope. The overall zeal, energy, health is also reckoned from 1st house.

The 1st house of horoscope also determines how the native projects himself in the society. This house is just like a mirror of one’s self which reflects the honesty or judgment of what we practice and what we preach.

The traits of 1st house will always remain the same and so on will be the further houses up to 12th house only there will be change in rashi posited in 1st house of horoscope. i.e. Rising rashi for different people can be same as well as different, depending upon the transit of sun in that particular period of time in which native was born.

The lord of Aries Rashi is Mars which in itself is dry, fiery planet and depicts masculine energy. Mars is also referred as Red Planet. To check the veracity of 1st house we also need to check the position of Lagna Lord as if lagna lord is not well placed the results of 1st house will be compromised. Whereas well placed lagna lord enhances the result of lagna. Therefore while evaluating the result of 1st house it is very important to evaluate the position of the lord of 1st house. With the change in lagna rashi, lagna lord will also change. Sun is exalted in Aries, therefore whenever sun being posited in lagna or anywhere in horoscope in Aries rashi it will give benefic results.

Few points to be considered while determining the strength of the 1st house:

·         Placement of lagan lord of 1st house.

·         Aspect on 1st house and on lagan lord whether of malefic planets or benefic planets.

·         Points with 1st house in Ashtakwarga.

To conclude we can say 1st house is the most important house to analyze the life of native. It tells about the physical attributes like personality, outlook, and appearance of the native. It is the “ME” factor i.e. how do I look, how other person perceive me, what is my nature, how will be my married life etc. To gets the gains and fruits of efforts the 1st house should be free from affliction or any kind of malefic influence.
